Story

As early as the middle of the 19th century, there was a simple farm on the site of today's hotel, which was continuously expanded between 1870 and 1900. In the brochures of the time, the owner Wendelin Looser described a modern "Gasthof zum Sternen" with a horse post office, telegraph office and its own bathrooms. Excellent spring water, healthy alpine air and fresh whey complete the offer. Around 1900, 1 day full board was already available from CHF 3.00 per day, but without meat meals. An additional 50 Rp. per plate was charged for meat.

In 1935, the founder's grandson, Walter Looser, added a new hotel wing and a popular dancing bar, giving the building its almost unchanged appearance to this day. In 1936, 1 day full board cost between CHF 8.50 and CHF 13.00 per person. Walter Looser was also the initiator of a modern funicular on the Iltios, which had already been built a year earlier. Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands twice spent her winter holidays with her whole family in what was then a state-of-the-art hotel. At that time, a stay for wealthy tourists often lasted several weeks.
The Hotel Sternen quickly flourished again after the World War and was successfully run by the Looser family for several decades. In 1985 the "stars" were sold for the first time. This was followed by turbulent times with further changes of ownership and many ups and downs.
Since 2001, Hotel Sternen has been managed by Sternen Toggenburg AG, which was also able to purchase the property and land in 2006. Since then we have continuously invested in the successful future of the house. The focus is on the joy of leading more than 150 years of hospitality into the future, traditional and yet in line with the market, equipped with the necessary comfort.
